Is the expiation paid for not fasting four months of Ramadan sufficient, or must these days be made up, and is it a condition to make them up before the onset of the next Ramadan?

If you paid the expiation (kaffara) for an illness from which recovery was not expected, and then you recovered, the expiation is sufficient for you, and you are not required to make up the fasts, according to the more preponderant opinion. However, if you paid the expiation while your illness was expected to be cured, then the expiation is not sufficient, and you are required to make up the fasts before the next Ramadan (definition) if possible. Otherwise, the expiatory feeding (fidyah (definition)) becomes obligatory along with making up the fasts. If the delay was due to ignorance of its prohibition, then only making up the fasts is required, without expiation.
