What is meant by the pilgrim performing Hajj at-Tamattu‘ being obligated to offer a sacrifice (hady), and is it the same as the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha, or does the ‘Umrah performer also offer a hady after ‘Umrah? And is a hady incumbent upon every pilgrim, or do the wife and her husband owe only one hady?

The Hady (sacrificial animal) is what is slaughtered from camels, cattle, or sheep in the Sacred Precinct (Haram (definition)) during the days of Nahr (slaughter, i.e., Eid al-Adha and the two days following it), for various reasons, including Tamattu' (combining 'Umrah (definition) and Hajj), Qiran (definition) (combining 'Umrah and Hajj with a single ihram (definition)), leaving an obligation, committing a prohibited act, or seeking closeness to Allah. The Mutamatti' (one who combines 'Umrah and Hajj with two separate ihrams) is obligated to offer a Hady. If he cannot find one, then he must fast for ten days: three during the Hajj and seven upon returning. The Hady is slaughtered during the days of Nahr. It is not obligatory for 'Umrah alone except as a voluntary act. The Mutamatti' offers the Hady, whether he is a man or a woman, and one Hady is not sufficient for both of them. As for the Udhiyah (definition) (sacrifice), it is a Sunnah (definition) for the pilgrim and others.
