How can my elderly and sick mother, who cannot tolerate fasting, make up the days she missed fasting, given that she only fasted for ten days?
If a woman is unable to fast due to illness and her recovery is hoped for, she must make up the days she missed. However, if she is unable to fast and her recovery is not expected due to a chronic illness or old age, she is not required to fast. Instead, she should feed one needy person for each day. This is the view of Ibn Abbas in his interpretation of the verse: "And upon those who are able to [fast, but with extreme hardship] is a ransom: the feeding of a needy person" (Quran 2:184). He explained that it is a concession for the elderly man and the elderly woman who can only fast with extreme difficulty. The amount of the ransom (fidyah) is half a sa' of the staple food of the country for each day, and it is permissible to give it to one poor person or more at any time during the month. If she is poor and unable to feed, then nothing is required of her.
