The answer

Summary of the Fatwa: Scholars differ on whether the soul dies or not. The correct view is that the death of souls means their separation from their bodies. If their death is understood in this sense, then they will taste death. However, if it is meant that they are annihilated and completely cease to exist, then they do not die in this respect. Rather, they remain in existence after their creation, either in bliss or torment. This is supported by hadiths about the bliss and torment of souls after separation [from the body], and by the Almighty's saying: "{They will not taste therein death, except the first death}" (44:56). The statement of the people of Hell, "{Our Lord, You made us die twice}" (40:11), does not imply the death of souls before the Day of Judgment. Similarly, the stunning of souls at the blowing of the Trumpet does not necessitate their death.
