What is death? Does the soul die on the Last Day when the Angel of Death seizes it? Is the death of the soul what occurs when it separates from the body in this world and in the grave?

The soul's departure is the severing of its connection with the body and its separation from it. Scholars have differed on whether it is the same as the nafs (self/psyche). Al-Suhayli mentioned that the ruh (spirit) which the angel breathes into the fetus is the nafs, provided it remains connected to the body. Al-Nawawi held that nafs here refers to the ruh, and that death is a transition and change of state, not annihilation.

Scholars have differed on whether the ruh dies or not. The commentator of Al-Tahawiyyah preferred the view that it does not die in the barzakh (definition) (interim realm). For the death of souls is their departure from their bodies; they are not utterly annihilated but remain in bliss or torment. The 'swooning' of souls at the blowing of the Trumpet does not mean their death, and the death of the Angel of Death has no bearing on the souls of others.

It is incumbent upon one who feels boredom with worldly life to utilize their time in achieving Tawhid (definition) (monotheism) and Iman (faith), by learning the Sacred Law, striving against the self to act upon it, and inviting others to it.
