Is it required for a friend to apologize and ask for forgiveness in order for her friend to forgive her after she spoke ill of her?

Forgiveness is one of the virtues commanded by Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). It was the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) character. Forgiveness and reconciliation make a Muslim honorable. Conversely, discord is among the destructive acts that shave away one's religion. It is forbidden to shun a Muslim for more than three nights, except for a legitimate religious reason. An exception to this is shunning those who commit sins, innovations (bid'ah), and reprehensible acts, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade speaking to the three who were left behind (during the Tabuk expedition). Scholars have agreed on the permissibility of shunning for more than three nights those whose company leads to a deficiency in religion, or harm to oneself or one's worldly affairs, for indeed, a beautiful shunning is better than harmful interaction.
