Can Allah forgive a suicide, or will he abide in Hellfire? And what should his family do to alleviate his suffering? And will his good deeds intercede for him?

Suicide is one of the gravest sins and the greatest destructive acts. A severe warning has been issued against its perpetrator in prophetic traditions, such as his (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron, his iron will be in his hand, and he will stab himself with it in his belly in the fire of Hell, abiding therein forever and eternally." Nevertheless, if a person who commits suicide dies as a monotheist, he is subject to the will of Allah Almighty; He may forgive him if He wills, or He may punish him if He wills. The proof for this is the Hadith (definition) of Tufail bin Amr Al-Dawsy concerning the man who migrated with him and committed suicide, as Tufail saw him in a dream forgiven, but his hands were covered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed for his forgiveness. The family of the deceased should seek forgiveness for him, show mercy towards him, and give charity on his behalf, for every good deed dedicated to him will benefit him. And Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good deeds.
