Is refusing to grant the father power of attorney over a bank account, after helping a needy brother financially, considered an act of disobedience to parents?
A father does not have the right to compel his son to grant him power of attorney over his bank account, and the son's refusal to do so is not considered an act of disobedience (uquq). However, if the father is poor and has no income, then the son is obligated to spend on him reasonably (bil-ma'ruf). But if the father is wealthy, then there is no obligation to spend on him. Nevertheless, it is an act of kindness (ihsan) to give him whatever money he requests, provided it does not harm the son. If the son does not do so, he should apologize gently. It is obligatory to be dutiful (birr) to one's parent, to show kindness to him, and to obey him in what is good (fi al-ma'ruf), regardless of his circumstances, for the parent is the middle gate of Paradise.
