The answer

The nisab for gold is 85 grams. If the gold reaches 100 grams and a hawl (full lunar year) passes over it, zakat becomes obligatory on it. However, if there is a debt that consumes the nisab or reduces it, and the owner has nothing other than this gold to offset the debt, then the amount of gold equivalent to the debt is deducted. If, after this deduction, the gold no longer reaches the nisab, then no zakat is due on it; this is because, according to the majority of scholars, debt prevents zakat on the amount of wealth equivalent to it.
