The answer

The eclipse prayer is a confirmed Sunnah according to the majority of scholars, and obligatory according to the Hanafis. The evidence for its being a Sunnah is the hadith of the Bedouin concerning the obligatory prayers, and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "So when you see them (the sun and moon eclipsed), supplicate and pray until it clears," and his (the Prophet's) performance of it. Its time is from the beginning of the eclipse until it clears, and it is not to be made up if missed.
