What is the ruling on a manager who neither greets with salaam nor shakes hands with his employees, and what do you advise him?
Our advice to him is to embody the manners of the Master of Messengers, peace and blessings be upon him, and to offer greetings of peace to his Muslim brothers. Let him know that peace is the greeting of the people of Paradise, and it is the nature of the pious and the custom of the pure. Whoever initiates the greeting of peace is closer to Allah. It is also a means of fostering acquaintance, affection, increasing love and fondness, and a cause for entering Paradise, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among yourselves." (Narrated by Muslim). The greeting of peace indicates a Muslim's humility and love for others, and it signifies the purity of his heart from envy, malice, hatred, arrogance, and disdain. It is also one of the rights Muslims have upon one another. Similarly, shaking hands is encouraged and is a cause for the forgiveness of sins. If spreading peace, initiating it, and shaking hands are of such great good and virtue, then it is fitting for him to hasten to it and not deprive himself of its فضائل (virtues) and fruits. He should beware that arrogance might be what prevents him from giving greetings of peace and shaking hands.
