The answer

Upholding kinship ties is obligatory, and Allah has emphasized it and warned against severing them, associating the cutting off of kinship with corruption on earth. Islamic law has linked the upholding of kinship ties with the expansion of sustenance and the prolongation of life, while threatening those who sever them with being cut off themselves. A Muslim must maintain kinship ties and help others to do so. He must prevent his wife's family from entering upon her if he knows they will corrupt his wife or cause him harm. Similarly, he is not permitted to prevent her family from giving gifts to her and to their grandchildren.
