What is the ruling on divorce, and what should a wife do regarding her husband who insults and harasses her family and insults her, yet refuses to divorce her, knowing that she has treated his children well?

The marital relationship is based on good companionship and mutual benevolence. It is not permissible for the husband to abandon his wife's family in times of hardship or to mistreat his wife. The husband is not religiously obligated to host his wife's family. It is advisable to be patient with the husband's actions, to respond to his ill-treatment with benevolence, and to remind him of the virtue of charity and relieving a Muslim's distress. Divorce is the most detestable of permissible acts to Allah, so it is not advisable. As for the husband's children, the wife is not obligated to maintain ties with them or to serve them.
