What should a Muslim do if he comes across a concise prohibitory Hadith that contradicts a Hadith permitting that prohibited matter?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The concise prohibitions are not clear. However, whoever is qualified to research but finds it difficult to understand conflicting evidence, should refer to the scholars specialized in resolving contradictions and giving preference, and in gathering evidence, or preferring some over others, or abrogation, while verifying the authenticity of the evidence. And whoever is not qualified to research, should ask the scholars. If that is not possible, then let him act upon the prohibition out of caution, according to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt."
