The question

Should my mother, who broke her fast in Ramadan due to pregnancy and has not made up the missed days until now, only make up for them, or make up for them along with expiation (kaffarah)? And what is the amount of the expiation, what types of food can be given, and is it permissible to give it to one family?

The answer

If a mother breaks her fast out of fear for herself, she is only required to make up the fast. If she breaks her fast out of fear for her fetus, she is required to make up the fast and feed one poor person for each day. She must also feed one poor person for each day she delays making up the fast, unless she was ignorant of the impermissibility of the delay. It is permissible to give the expiation to one or more poor persons, either with the making up of the fast, or before it, or after it. It can be given in any type of food. The obligatory amount is one mudd of food for each day (750 grams of rice or similar).
