What is the difference between innovation (bid'ah) and the Sunnah?
The is the methodology of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in belief and action. scholars have defined it as whatever has been transmitted from him, whether it be a saying, an action, an approval, or a description. His guidance is known by referring to books of biography (Sirah), characteristics (Shama'il), and Hadith. As for innovation (Bid'ah), it is an invented method in religion that resembles what is legislated, intended to exaggerate worship, such as adhering to specific manners and forms in remembrance (Dhikr), or specifying certain acts of worship at times not legislated. Innovation is misguidance and rejected for its perpetrator, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, then it is rejected."
