Does the initial non-acceptance of a suitor for my hand, despite his fiancée's testimony to his religiosity and good character, contradict the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If there comes to you one whose religiosity and character you are pleased with, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption"?

Legally, there is no obligation to accept a suitor, even if he is a man of religion and good character. The command in the hadith (definition) is for strong recommendation. One should not refuse marriage to him merely based on a fleeting glance, as he may possess moral beauty in his manners and good character. We advise performing Istikhara (prayer for guidance); if there is good in it, Allah will facilitate it. If incompatibility is feared, there is no sin in refusing him.
