The answer

Istikhara prayer is recommended for permissible matters. It consists of two rak'ahs, in addition to the obligatory prayers. After this, the worshiper supplicates with the du'a transmitted from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentions his need within it. Istikhara prayer is not performed for obligations, recommended acts, forbidden acts, or disliked acts. It can be performed within supererogatory prayers, and it should not be performed during disliked times unless there is a necessity. Supplication in general is recommended, and it is a great act of worship.
