The maximum duration for menstruation is fifteen days. If the blood that returns after a period of cessation, combined with the blood that preceded it and the period of purity in between, exceeds fifteen days, then it is considered istihadah (definition) (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding) and not hayd (menstruation). In this case, the woman must purify herself, perform ablution (wudu'), pray, fast, and do all that women in a state of purity do. It is also permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her.
