The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded covering vessels and closing doors while mentioning Allah's name, due to the potential corruption by devils if they are left uncovered. This is because Satan does not untie a waterskin, open a door, or uncover a vessel. If a Muslim cannot find anything but a stick to place across his vessel and mention Allah's name, then he should do so. All these commands are for recommendation (mandub). As for eating food that was in an uncovered vessel, there is no objection to it if the person is certain of its wholesomeness and nothing has fallen into it that would affect it.
