The question

Is a husband rewarded or sinful if he divorces his wife who mistreats him, hates his family, threatens him, and does all of this despite his attempts to mend their relationship? And how is the non-responsiveness of supplication (du'a) and seeking guidance (istikharah) in this situation to be interpreted? Is it permissible for him to delay her divorce to reduce the costs of separation? And do her fasting, prayers, and acts of worship affect her disobedience and harm to her husband?

The answer

Divorce is permissible if there is a need for it, such as a wife's ill-treatment and the husband's suffering. The fact that you sought Allah's guidance (istikharah) before marriage does not mean that discord or separation will not occur; it might be better for you. The fulfillment of a supplication is not limited to the attainment of the desired outcome; it might be stored for the Hereafter or avert an evil. It is permissible to pressure a wife who harms her husband to redeem herself with money. It is not appropriate to discuss matters that have been referred to the judiciary. A woman who strives in worship yet harms her husband and takes a false oath ( ghamus) is in grave danger.
