Is zakat obligatory on engagement gold amounting to 100 grams, and is the zakat on additional gold added to it, and what is the nisab and duration for zakat to be obligatory?
The fatwa issued by us is that zakat is not obligatory on gold designated for adornment unless it is intended for both adornment and savings or trade, in which case zakat becomes obligatory on it every year. This is the view of the majority of scholars. It is recommended for a woman to pay zakat on gold designated solely for adornment, as a precaution and to avoid scholarly disagreement.
Purchased gold takes the same ruling as old gold: if it is intended solely for adornment, zakat is not obligatory; if it is intended for both adornment and savings, or for savings only, zakat becomes obligatory, and it is due from its owner. The hawl (one-year period) for purchased gold intended for savings is the same as the hawl of its origin (the money from which it was purchased).
According to those who obligate zakat on gold designated for adornment, there are two opinions regarding the hawl for purchased gold: The first is the view of the majority (a new hawl begins for it), and the second is the view of the Hanafis (its hawl is the same as that of the old gold). The latter is more cautious and easier to calculate.
Zakat is obligatory every year on wealth, gold, and silver, with two conditions: reaching the nisab (minimum threshold) and the completion of a hawl. The nisab for gold is 85 grams, and for silver is 595 grams. The nisab for cash assets is estimated by the lower of the two nisabs in value (currently the nisab of silver).
