Must a wife endure repeated insults and humiliation from her husband, even if he apologizes sometimes and they both acknowledge shortcomings, and is a husband who publicly complains about his wife's insults treated with the same principle?

A husband's abuse of his wife through cursing and beating is a grave matter. The Quran and Sunnah (definition) have encouraged good treatment of wives. A wife's abuse of her husband through cursing is a form of defiance (nushooz), especially in front of his family, and the matter requires repentance. Respect and understanding should prevail between spouses, and each should know their rights and duties, for each owes the other in kindness. Moreover, each party must be patient with the other to preserve the family and children, especially with the presence of a young daughter who might be affected by separation.
