What is the ruling on opening gaming websites on the Internet, and are they among the temptations and desires that must be avoided?

Allah created humankind for worship, endowing them with diverse characteristics. They oscillate between activity and idleness, seriousness and play. Allah has permitted them forms of entertainment and amusement that relieve boredom and weariness after diligence and work.

Play and amusement are psychological needs, and Islam has given them importance, making them a means to serve and assist in fulfilling religious obligations. Examples of this include: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no racing except in hoof, or arrow, or camel" (Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Nasa'i). This indicates the permissibility of specific types of racing. His racing with his wife Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, (Narrated by Al-Bukhari), which indicates the permissibility of foot racing. His standing before the Abyssinians while they played with spears (Narrated by Al-Bukhari), and the singing of young girls on the day of Eid in his presence (Narrated by Al-Bukhari). This demonstrates the Lawgiver's attention to entertainment that serves legitimate purposes, such as physical development and training in weaponry.

The aim is for the Muslim to elevate this aspect of their life, making it a reminder of and aid to obedience to Allah. As for playing online, it is permissible if it adheres to the controls of Islamic law, does not involve anything forbidden, and does not distract from obligations. However, it may not achieve the Lawgiver's intent for practicing play, and there is concern for the child regarding moral and health harms, as well as screen addiction.
