It is not permissible to give zakat to a married woman if her family is of moderate means, because zakat is the right of the poor and the needy. However, wealthy relatives should help them from sources other than zakat, and assist her in educating her children. This carries a great reward, combining kinship ties, charity, and assistance in seeking knowledge. If this is not possible and the family is unable to cover the educational expenses of their children, some scholars have permitted giving zakat to students of knowledge under certain conditions, including that the students be gifted, that the knowledge be something Muslims need, such as medicine and engineering, and that they are unable to combine earning a living with studying.
