What is the ruling on one who says with his tongue, "I will not do this thing," and internally swears an oath of divorce? And what is the ruling on one who says with his tongue, "I wish I would be divorced"? And does divorce take place in either case?

"Whispers of divorce" (passing thoughts about divorce) have no consequences, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah has pardoned for my Ummah that which they whisper to themselves, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it." Therefore, divorce does not take effect except by utterance. And whoever says, "I wish I would divorce" does not have his divorce take effect, because he did not actually divorce. It is important to uproot intrusive thoughts of divorce, as repelling evil thoughts prevents them from turning into actions and habits that are difficult to get rid of. If both spouses know their rights and fulfill them, then the plot of Satan has been foiled.
