What must I do to atone for aborting a deformed fetus in the fourth month, and is that considered taking a life?
It is forbidden to abort the fetus after the soul has been breathed into it, unless its continued presence poses a danger to the mother's life. It is hoped that the husband's ignorance of the ruling and his adherence to doctors' instructions will be an excuse to lift the sin from him. The blood money (Diyya) is obligatory upon the one who directly performed the abortion, not upon the one who caused it. Thus, there is no Diyya on the husband, nor on the wife - according to the more preponderant opinion - if she performed it with the husband's permission. And according to the view that it is obligatory upon the wife, it is waived if the husband forgives it. As for the expiation (Kaffarah), it is a matter of dispute, and according to the view that it is obligatory, it is binding upon everyone who participated in the abortion, which is fasting for two consecutive months for whoever cannot find a slave to free.
