What is the ruling on music, and is it permissible or forbidden? And what should we do when we hear it in public places such as markets and private cars?

It is not permissible to listen to singing accompanied by musical instruments; it is forbidden. As for hearing singing unintentionally, and disliking it in one's heart, there is no sin in that. It is obligatory for a Muslim to forbid evil with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart, which is the weakest of faith. A Muslim must not be ashamed to speak the truth, enjoin good, and forbid evil. If people respond, he gains two rewards: the reward for their righteousness and the reward for enjoining good. If they do not respond, he gains the reward for enjoining good and forbidding evil.
