The answer

Following the Imam is obligatory, and it is not permissible for the ma'mum (follower) to precede him or be alongside him in actions. It is mustahabb (recommended) for the ma'mum to begin the actions of prayer after the Imam has finished them. The jurists have mentioned that following means that the ma'mum should begin each action after the Imam has started it and before he has finished it. It is (disliked) to delay significantly behind the Imam. As for delaying after the Imam has said the tasleem (salutation), some scholars disliked it or prohibited it.
