Is prayer obligatory for a disabled man over 95 years old, confined to his bed, and barely able to utter two coherent words?
The obligation of prayer is lifted from an elderly person who has lost their sanity. However, if they are still sane but unable to recite, they should recite Al-Fatihah, a surah, and the prescribed supplications in their heart. If they are able to perform ablution, they should do so; otherwise, they should perform tayammum (dry ablution). If they are unable to pray standing, they should pray sitting. If they are unable to pray sitting, they should pray lying on their right side, then on their left side, then on their back. Prayer is not waived for them as long as they retain their sanity, even if they can only intend the prayer in their heart or by signaling with the corner of their eye.
