The answer

The Shafi'is hold that exchanging gold for silver or vice versa necessitates a new hawl (lunar year) for zakat. However, the majority of jurists (Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis) maintain that the hawl is not interrupted; rather, it is built upon the hawl of the initial wealth. This latter view is considered the most evident and cautious. If new wealth is added to the exchanged wealth, the amount representing the value of the old wealth is subject to zakat upon the completion of its first hawl, while the added wealth is subject to zakat upon the completion of its own hawl. For ease, it is permissible to make a single hawl for the entirety of the purchased wealth.
