What should be done regarding parents' refusal of their daughter's marriage to a person she sought God's guidance about and is committed to, despite the suitor's insistence and the unconvincing reasons [for the refusal], and despite the encouragement of relatives and friends for the marriage, and despite the girl's fear of God's wrath if she marries without a guardian, or if she wrongs her parents?

If a young man is committed, religious, and of good character, then the parents have no right to prevent the marriage to him, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If there comes to you one whose character and religious commitment you approve of, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." Try to convince your family by seeking Allah's help and by involving someone who holds influence with them. If they refuse, then a guardian preventing his ward from marrying a suitable man is considered 'adhl (unjust obstruction), and the matter can be taken to the Sharia (definition) judge. However, if you see that patience and seeking someone else is a way of honoring your parents, then that is more preferable. It is permissible for a woman to offer herself in marriage to a righteous man. For chastity, avoid incitements to desire and be diligent in acts of obedience, especially fasting.
