What is the role of Qiyas (analogical reasoning) in deriving Sharia rulings?

Analogy (Qiyas (definition)) plays a significant role in the derivation of Islamic rulings, being the fourth source after the Qur’an, Sunnah (definition), and Ijma‘ (consensus). Scriptural evidence has converged on its applicability, such as Allah’s saying: (So take admonition, O people of vision!) and His saying: (And if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, then those who can draw sound conclusions from them would have known it). The importance of analogy lies in the fact that the texts of revelation are limited, whereas incidents and new occurrences are constantly renewed and endless. All actions of the legally competent have a ruling in Islamic law. Therefore, if no text or consensus is found, the mujtahid (independent jurist) uses analogy with its controls and conditions. Al-Shanqeeti mentioned that analogy is one of the most important principles of jurisprudence, from which branches and the science of differences emerge, and through it, rulings and endless occurrences are known. Ibn al-Qasim narrated from Malik that istihsan (preferential juristic opinion, which can involve analogy) and ijtihad (definition) (independent reasoning) constitute nine-tenths of knowledge.
