What is the ruling on a young man working for a commercial insurance company?

It is not permissible to work for commercial insurance companies because they are based on an illegitimate foundation and involve Shar'i prohibitions such as gharar (excessive uncertainty), gambling, and riba (interest). Working for them is considered assisting in sin, and Allah has forbidden that, saying: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." An increase in salary does not justify committing what is forbidden, for unlawful gain is little, even if it is abundant.
