What is the ruling on generally taking gifts offered with products, and what is the ruling on taking a high-value gift that exceeds the price of the product, which is acquired through a game similar to golf? Is this considered maysir (gambling)? And if it is forbidden, what is the ruling on using the gift (a bottle of shampoo) and how can one expiate for that?

If the price of the goods does not exceed that of their equivalents in other stores, and the buyer purchases them out of necessity, not for the purpose of entering a draw or game to obtain a gift, then there is no objection, according to the more preponderant of the two scholarly opinions.

However, if the merchant raises the price for the sake of the prize, it is impermissible, as it makes buyers either winners or losers, which is a form of gambling. But if he sells at market price, then it is permissible for him to offer prizes as an encouragement for people to buy.

From the buyer's perspective, if he purchases the item out of necessity, not solely for the prize, then there is no harm in his purchase. However, if he buys solely for the prize and does not want the item, this constitutes squandering money, which is forbidden in Islamic law.
