The answer

Scholars differed regarding the ruling on whether a latecomer (masbuq) should follow the Imam in the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw) if the Imam prostrates after the salutation. The Hanafis and Hanbalis held that the latecomer should follow him before standing up to make up the missed rak'ahs. The Malikis and Shafi'is, however, held that he should first stand up and make up the missed rak'ahs, and once he has completed his prayer, he should perform the prostration of forgetfulness. This is a matter subject to ijtihad (independent juristic reasoning).
