Is it normal for the feeling of hypocrisy or showing off to be followed by commitment, then a relapse?
Hypocrisy is either doctrinal or practical, not merely a feeling. If a person is engaged in either type of hypocrisy, they must hasten to repent. As for weakness in mindfulness or a lack of perfect devotion to Allah, this is natural, and even the Companions complained about it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified that a person experiences moments of presence and moments of languor. As for showing off (riyaa'), it is minor , and one must repent from it and dedicate worship solely to Allah, for Allah will say to those who showed off on the Day of Resurrection: "Go to those for whom you used to show off in the world and see if you find any reward with them!"
