To be one who relies on God, must I do what is required without eagerness or toil, or must I strive and be keen on seeking provision to achieve the reliance on God that is required by the Sharia, and will God suffice me with what I do of work due to my preoccupation with studying?

It is prescribed to exert permissible means in seeking provision (rizq) with diligence. The negation of greed (al-manaawi) means greed for forbidden ways and doubtful matters, not the absence of diligence in acquiring provision through permissible means. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Be keen on what benefits you, seek Allah's help, and do not be helpless." Whoever desires to rely on Allah (tawakkul (definition)) must undertake all possible means. Indeed, whoever believes that reliance on Allah dispenses with the commanded means is misguided.
