Is love sufficient for a happy marital life?

For a happy marital life, love alone is not enough; other elements such as understanding, compatibility of temperaments, and observing Allah's law must be present. Love alone does not guarantee the continuity of the relationship. Umar ibn al-Khattab indicated that homes are not built entirely on love, but on good companionship and Islam. Affection and love may develop between spouses over time through kind treatment and fulfilling each party's desires. A Muslim is obligated to treat his wife with kindness, whether he loves her or dislikes her.
