The question

How can a Muslim achieve devotion (khushu') in acts of worship such as prayer, reciting the Qur'an, and remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and get rid of obsessive compulsive whispers (waswas) related to the essence of Allah, the Messenger, the Qur'an, and other matters? And will he be held accountable for these whispers that are beyond his control?

The answer

Turn away from these whispers and do not pay attention to them, for they do not harm you; rather, you are rewarded for repelling them. Your aversion to them is a sign of the sincerity of your faith. Seek help in achieving khushu' (devotional humility) through prayer and seeking refuge in Allah. Continue to do good deeds, ponder the Quran, and reflect on Allah's names and attributes. Have a good opinion of your Lord, for He is Appreciative, accepting little and forgiving much. Your feeling of being unacceptable is from the whispers of Satan, aiming to divert you from having a good opinion of Allah.
