Whoever begins an obligatory fast, such as making up for missed days of Ramadan or an expiatory fast for an oath, is not permitted to break it without a compliant excuse. If he breaks it, he must make up that day and there is no expiation due upon him. If the breaking of the fast was without an excuse, he must repent to Allah.
