What is the ruling on money earned from using pirated software, and is working with such software unlawful (haram)?

Contemporary scholars have differed concerning the copying of computer programs without the permission of their owners to copy them for free. The fatwa (definition) adopted on the website is that it is impermissible. Therefore, one must cease using them in the future, repent to Allah for past actions, and strive to restore the rights of their owners by assessing the benefit that was denied to them, and donate its value as charity if reaching them is impossible. As for the money earned by using these programs, it is permissible.
