If the muezzin calls the while you are reciting the Quran or performing dhikr (remembrance of Allah), you should pause and follow the muezzin, based on the : "When you hear the call [to prayer], say as the muezzin says," and because the adhan is a temporary act of worship. Some scholars have held that answering the muezzin is obligatory, but the preponderant opinion is that it is highly recommended (mustahabb). However, if the muezzin calls the adhan while you are performing prayer, you should complete your prayer, according to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, there is preoccupation in prayer."
