Is it obligatory to perform the two rak'ahs of "Tahiyyat al-Masjid" (greeting the mosque) before the Maghrib prayer, even if it causes objection and disapproval from worshippers on the pretext of violating the madhhab (school of thought), or is it better to forgo them to avoid discord?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded two rak'ahs for greeting the mosque through his words, actions, and tacit approval. Scholars differed regarding the permissibility of performing them during prohibited times. Abu Hanifa and Malik were of the opinion that they are not permissible, while Al-Shafi'i held them to be permissible, and this is the preferred view of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. He based his argument on the Prophet's command to greet the mosque even during the khutbah (definition) (sermon), which is a time of prohibition. If performing this Sunnah (definition) leads to disagreement and disunity among the worshippers, it is better to abandon it for the sake of uniting hearts and gathering the word, while striving to teach them the Sunnah. As Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned, the Imam should forgo what he considers better if it helps unite the congregants.
