What is the solution for attaining reverence, focus, and tranquility in prayer, given the feelings of sadness and distress caused by the Imam's crying and devotion during it?
The greatest cause of humility (khushu') is the knowledge that it is the essence and spirit of prayer (Salah), and that humility is one of the greatest requisites for success (falah). Humility is achieved by the servant's devotion to his prayer, his turning away from worldly matters, contemplating the dhikr (remembrances), reflecting on the meanings of the verses, and avoiding everything that distracts the mind. As for the dryness of the eyes from weeping out of awe of Allah, it stems from hardness of heart. Its cure lies in the Holy Quran, in faith and righteous deeds, in adhering to regular acts of obedience, avoiding sins, and seeking repentance and forgiveness. Weeping while reciting the Quran is a characteristic of the gnostics, as Allah Almighty says: "And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility."
