Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) perform the night vigil every night or on some nights? What is the ruling on performing the night vigil every night without missing a single one until death? And did the righteous predecessors perform it every night or on some nights, or is performing it every night an innovation?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to regularly perform night prayers (Qiyam al-Layl). If he missed them due to illness or sleep, he would make them up during the day with twelve rak'ahs. Qiyam al-Layl is among the best and most sublime acts of worship, and the Ummah has unanimously agreed upon its desirability and persistence. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." And our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?" Therefore, a Muslim should make sure to have a share of Qiyam al-Layl and continue with it, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him), for the most beloved deed to Allah is the most consistent, even if it is little. And one should conclude Qiyam al-Layl with Witr prayer.
