What is the ruling on jokes in Islam, and are they considered idle talk if they are not mocking the religion?

Amusement through speech and joking is permissible if it is truthful and rightful, especially if not done excessively. The Prophet used to joke and would only speak the truth. However, that which involves lying is impermissible, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Woe to him who speaks and lies to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him, then woe to him."
