What should a son do who celebrates Mother's Day, and now wishes to stop doing so, but fears the wrath of his mother who is accustomed to this celebration and refuses to be convinced of its impermissibility?

Celebrating Mother's Day is an innovated bid‘ah that neither the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor his noble companions observed. It also involves imitation of the disbelievers, and it is not permissible to obey one's mother in this regard because it is an act of disobedience, as obedience is only in what is good. A mother's right is respect, honor, and dutifulness throughout the entire year. This celebration is an innovation that only emerged from societies where disobedience to parents became widespread. The Muslim Ummah has been commanded to be dutiful to parents, and a mother holds a great status in the religion even after her passing. Sheikh Ali Mahfouz stated that this celebration is an imitation of the disbelievers. Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin clarified that all holidays that contradict the prescribed Islamic holidays are newly invented bid‘ahs, and the only prescribed Islamic holidays are Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Jumu'ah (Friday). A Muslim should be proud of their religion and be content with what the Shari'ah has defined, and a mother's right is dutifulness and care at all times and in all places.
