What should be done when visiting relatives or friends, how long should the visit last, and how should one depart?

Visits hold importance in Islamic law and have their etiquette, including: having a good intention, balancing the duration of the visit, choosing an appropriate time for the visited person, seeking permission three times before entering by saying "peace be upon you" followed by the question "May I enter?" while standing beside the door and not directly in front of it, stating one's name when asked about the caller, leaving if permission is not granted, sitting where the host permits, avoiding idle talk, not prolonging the visit, supplicating for the household after eating, seeking permission before departing, reciting the expiation for the gathering (kaffarat al-majlis), and offering greetings of peace upon departure.
