Is it permissible to abandon a friend who has ruined the relationship between the questioner and her other friends, and who secretly curses and abuses her? Is it permissible for the questioner to abandon her friends who believed her [the former friend] and changed their attitude towards her? And is it permissible to supplicate against her?
The Sharia has forbidden back-turning (تدابر) and abandonment (هجران), so it is not permissible for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three nights, unless one fears harm to his religion or worldly life from maintaining the connection. According to the majority of scholars, abandonment ceases merely by offering and returning salutations (peace greetings). What one finds within himself of distress towards his friends might be from the instigations of Satan. Therefore, the Quran guides us to speak that which is best and to repel evil with good. Confronting evil with good brings about affection, initiating kind words removes grudges, and forgiving the wrongdoer increases the forgiver in honor, and through it, one attains Allah's pardon and forgiveness.
